You may think that Californians are all about Chihuahuas and that Alaskans love their Huskies, but those aren't the states' most sought-after breeds. Read on to see what breeds residents around the country are looking into most.
Colorado Loves To Celebrate Their Goldens
The success of the Air Bud franchise is a testament to America's lasting love of Golden retrievers. One state that loves them above other breeds is Colorado. The state appreciates Goldens so much that they even had a gathering in Denver to celebrate International Golden Retriever Day.
AKC notes that the dogs are both committed workers and friendly family dogs. The athletic breed weighs an average of 65 pounds and is highly intelligent. Coloradans will be happy to hear that Goldens love the great outdoors and are talented swimmers.

Alongside New Jersey, Florida also pegs the Maltese to be their dog breed of choice. These cute little dogs may look like Shih Tzus at first glance, but if you look a little closer you'll notice that their nose is slightly larger.
Maltese also have a coat that tends to be straighter than that of the Shih Tzu, or at least doesn't go in quite as many directions. Floridians love this cute little dog so much that they even have clubs for them!
Illinois Is Also A Big Fan Of Rottweilers
In addition to Pennsylvania, Illinois also had Rottweilers at the top of their dog breed list. Anyone who knows a Rottie will tell you that they're big teddy bears who only unleash their ferocious side when necessary. Their behavior is more a testament to their owner and how they were raised than anything.
This is especially true considering that Rottweilers are easy to train and loyal. A prime example of this breed's potential was when a Rottie named Wynd won the Award for Canine Excellence in Therapy. That's right, even a Rottweiler can be a therapy dog.
Iowa Agrees With Colorado On Golden Retrievers
Golden retrievers are so adorable and fun-loving that it only seems logical they'd be favored by more than one state. In addition to Colorado, Iowa also finds these fur buddies to be the top of the line when it comes to dog breeds.

One thing that might explain why Missourians love this breed, in particular, is its ability to handle the state's snowy winters. In addition to its dense coat, Akitas also have webbed feet to make it easier to walk in the snow.
Nebraska Is Another Pembroke Welsh Corgi Fan
Pembroke Welsh corgis have been so well represented as Queen Elizabeth II's trusted pet of choice that we're surprised more states didn't follow suit. In addition to Oregon, Nebraska is also a big fan of these adorable dogs.
As we mentioned, they are incredibly friendly and can get around surprisingly well given their almost humorous build. AKC even mentions that they are one of the world's most popular herding breeds. That's what we call small and mighty!
Oklahoma Agrees With Arkansas On Basset Hounds
Like Arkansas, Oklahoma rates Basset Hounds number one when it comes to dog breeds. This isn't that much of a surprise considering that they partake in AKC's Basset Hound Field Trials, which have been around since 1937.
The event tests this breed's hunting ability by having Basset Hounds chase after hares, but they don't let them catch the animals, of course. The events happen all over the country, and Oklahoma is one of the proud states to host.
Texans Also Love Themselves A French Bulldog
One thing that California and Texas have in common is their love for French bulldogs, a breed that tops both of their lists. The sturdy yet petite dog seems to fit right in with both scenes as they are very adaptable.
Many celebrities own Frenchies such as Martha Stewart, Hilary Duff, and Hugh Jackman. For the Texans who are more glam and less country, these pooches are a great option because they act like a lapdog without looking quite so prissy.
Washington Also Appreciates The Siberian Husky
Siberian huskies are a fan favorite in not only Connecticut but also Washington. These sled dogs are adaptable enough to do well in a variety of climates, but we'd imagine they appreciate a snowy winter up North.
Huskies that are well-exercised and taken care of by a loving family can be expected to live upwards of 14 years. Though they're tall, standing at just under two-feet, they have a lean, muscular build that puts them between 35 and 60 pounds.

Maryland isn't the only state that ranks Bichon Frise number one. Wisconsin was also found to be more interested in this breed than others. Bichons have an adorable stout and beady eyes that resemble many of the other small breeds on this list.
In fact, we would bet that if you have a white Maltese a perm, it would be hard to tell the two apart. Still, pet owners will tell you that even the most subtle differences go a long way when picking the right breed.
North Carolinians Also Love The Shih Tzu
Don't worry North Carolinians, we didn't forget you. If you remember from a while back, we noted that South Carolinians favor Boxers as their dream breed. Up in North Carolina, though, they agree with Alabama and Arizona that the choice dog is a Shih Tzu.
These little dogs have one of the longest lifespans on this list, averaging at up to 18-years-old! When torn between similar dogs, sometimes taking details like longevity into consideration can become the dealbreaker.
New Hampshire Is Another Golden Retriever Lover
Some may not agree with the fact that Labrador retrievers have yet to be listed, and yet this is the third state Goldens have claimed. To put those individuals at ease, we'll remind you that AKC has named Labrador retrievers the most popular US dog since 1991.
Still, Colorado, Iowa, and New Hampshire can't get enough of the shaggier Goldens. They are incredibly beautiful yet hardworking animals, and there's something to be said about their seemingly eternal youth.
