When you think of romantic gestures, everyone has their personal favorite. It's not the price that matters, but the thought that goes into it. So what if that grand gesture isn't coming from your partner, but rather a married friend?

Now one man on Reddit is wondering if he overreacted after his girlfriend received an extravagant gift from their friend for her birthday—to the tune of hundreds of dollars' worth of red roses.

From dinner dates to weekend getaways, boxes of chocolate, or a giant teddy bear, there are a lot of ways to swoon your lover.

So when it comes to something like a bouquet of red roses, do you consider them to be the ultimate romantic gesture that a man can do for a woman? One man on Reddit seemed to think so.

User heyhodadio took to Reddit to get some clarity regarding how he reacted to a present a close friend gave his girlfriend for her birthday.

He begins the post by saying that a friend of his and his girlfriend is a partner in a business that sells flowers. The friend himself is not a florist, but he is a multimillionaire and a married man. (Remember that for later.)

For her birthday, the girlfriend received a present from her married/multimillionaire friend—a large and extravagant bouquet of red roses. The boyfriend estimated their market value anywhere between $500-$1000.

He then adds that his girlfriend apparently picked the color of the roses ahead of time and knew they were coming. Still, she sees them as a thoughtful present, but the boyfriend sees it as something else.

Am I In The Wrong?

"I'm upset because they’re better flowers than I can afford for her birthday so anything I get for her will be a pity, she posted it on Instagram for everybody to see, and she is just going to tell people they’re from me and have me lie if somebody asks."

The boyfriend then says that he got "extremely jealous" and was about to message his friend saying the gift was too much. The girlfriend stopped him from sending the text and said that if he doesn't like it, the issue is with her and not the friend.

While Reddit did vote him to be in the wrong, responses were fairly split as to who was at fault. Many users thought that the boyfriend's jealousy was evident and that there's nothing wrong with a wealthy person lavishing their friends in gifts if they want to.

"More importantly big grand gestures are lovely, but everyone who's old enough to date should understand that the big gestures aren't what counts."

Many users defended the boyfriend and thought that his reaction was appropriate. Some also faulted the girlfriend for not setting clear boundaries with her friend, especially because she's planning to lie about who actually sent her the flowers.

"Not a single person here is mentioning the fact the flowers are a romantic gift, like hello! Everyone is acting like it was a damn Chili's gift card and they're roses to boot! The flower most associated with love and passion."
