Cats are amazing and interesting creatures for a lot of reasons. One of those reasons is the fact that they sleep a lot... up to 16 hours a day! That's a lot of hours to get into some really awkward and hilarious sleeping positions. From felines who zonk out in weird places to those that make funny faces while they sleep, we enjoy them all. Take a look at these awkwardly adorable sleeping cats and try not to yawn (or laugh).
Extreme Reclining
For some reason, the world of extreme sports hasn't started including activities like relaxing or napping. We’d like to see all that change because this cat could easily sweep the competition with its serious reclining skills.
It takes years of practice to reach this level, where your head hangs completely off the surface and is suspended upside-down. An amateur couldn’t last five seconds in this position but our gold-medal winner here has probably been passed out like this for hours. It’s called dedication, people.
Surrender To Sleepytime
Look at these three ridiculous cats all lying in a row… zonked out on the doormat together with their front paws in the air like they're surrendering.
It’s a good thing camera phones are (mostly) silent so cat companions don’t wake up their furry buddies when they’re taking great photos like this one. You wouldn’t want to disturb three sleeping cats who were just trying to get a little shut-eye!
There's A Pillow Right Behind You!
Don't look now, sleepyhead, but there’s a comfy pillow right behind you! The cat could have eased on back and had a napping position that wasn’t so ridiculous-looking, but then we wouldn’t have this adorable photo to ooh and aah over.
It might be a funny way to sleep, but that doesn’t take away from kitty’s cuteness. That little orange head is just so pettable, and we hope it’s filled with nothing but sweet dreams.
Creative Napping
This photo proves once and for all that cats can fall asleep anywhere. You know how it sometimes takes humans hours to doze off in their comfortable beds? Yeah, that's not really the case with cats.

We’re going to go easy on the cat though because it's really cute and looks like the perfect co-worker. Who wouldn’t want that sweetie curled up next to them as they typed away at their reports?
Sleeping Beauty
How would you like it if someone took photos of you when you were off in dreamland? You probably wouldn't, because most people don’t look their best while they’re sound asleep. It appears that the same is true for cats.
This snuggle buddy let itself fall asleep around people with a camera, which can sometimes turn out badly. We don’t care that kitty’s making a ridiculous face here, though, we think that pink tongue is adorable!
This Totally Works
Yeah, sure, this white kitten is not using the pillow according to the instruction manual. But we think this is a pretty darn great place to sneak in and take a quick nap. It's soft and cozy… really the ideal spot for a snooze.
You just have to watch out and make sure no one comes along and tries to use the pillow while you’re in it. That could get awkward.
Just Keeping An Eye On Things
Never trust a cat to guard the house, because this is what might happen. This kitty cat probably promised to keep a close watch over things and let everyone know if any shady characters came along.
Although the cat's intentions were good, it apparently found this bizarre position to be too comfy and fell asleep at the window... with their face still poking through the blinds! We wish someone had gotten a picture from the outside of the house.
Too Tired To Go On
That's quite a journey that this tiny little ball of gray fluff embarked on! Kitty tried to go all the way from the armchair to the table and just… couldn’t… make it without a nap. So here it finds itself, with its head and front paws on the table and rear end resting on the chair.
We know the feeling, but only wished we looked so cute when we were exhausted. This kitten could make anything adorable.
Warm And Cozy
Maybe a little TOO cozy. This winter snuggler is just loving life by the warm glow of the fireplace. And we really can't blame them. When it’s snowy and wet and cold outside, there’s nothing like getting toasty and warm by a fire inside.
We can only imagine what this tabby is dreaming of, but sugarplum fairies seem like a good guess. Either that or they're still thinking of the holiday Fancy Feast they just ate.
Contortionist Kitty
This is quite a sleepy scene! You have to check the picture out a couple of times to tell what's going on here because it just looks like a swirl of black and white floof and a pink nose in the middle.
Actually, upon closer inspection, that is exactly what the picture shows. There’s no hidden image or anything, it’s just a black-and-white cat all twisted up into the most uncomfortable looking fur pretzel ever.
Mine, All Mine
Don't even think about trying to sleep in one of those pet beds. Doesn’t matter how tired you are or how hard you’ve worked all day. They both belong to this bed hog, who is sleeping on them at the same time to prove it.
It might not be very comfortable to sleep that way, but this cat does not care. It just doesn’t want to share with anyone, for any reason.
Just Hangin' Around
Let's face it, doing laundry is no fun. There's all the sorting and the pre-rinsing and… oh, who are we kidding? This cat has taken absolutely none of those steps. In fact, it looks like it doesn’t even have anything to wash!
Nope, it just saw this clothes drying rack and thought it looked like a great place to stretch out and doze. Although the cat looks pretty ridiculous, we’re willing to give this pose a try next time laundry day rolls around.
Silly Kitties, Dishes Are For Eating!
Here's a purrrfectly adorable example of the whole "If it fits, I sits" phenomena. Two sweet and very tiny cats have discovered their food dishes and decided that they were the perfect place to take a snooze together.
And what a sight it is to see. The cats are perfectly curled up and dreaming their sweet little kitten dreams… hope they’re good ones filled with kibble and balls of yarn!
A Tisket, A Tasket...
… a kitty cat in a basket. Looks like this tuckered-out kitty just couldn't pass up the opportunity to try out this woven basket for size. And guess what? It was the perfect fit.
Let’s just hope that someone doesn’t walk by and see the sweetie all sound asleep in here. After all, it’d be pretty easy to pick the basket up by the handles and walk away with the whole package of cuddly cuteness.
Triple Trance!
From the looks of this scene, the trio of kitties might have gotten themselves into some catnip. After all, they look really relaxed. The one in the middle is soooo relaxed, in fact, that it appears to have fallen fast asleep with its legs sticking up in the air!
The cats on either side are just as sleepy-looking, they just haven't rolled themselves over yet into that ultimate napping position.
Writer's Block
Well, this is unfortunate for the cat but lucky for us. It appears that someone got a bad case of writer's block and just couldn’t finish writing their essay in their composition book. "I’ll just close my eyes for a minute and let inspiration come to me," the cat might have thought.
That was an error in judgment and now Kitty is going to show up for class empty-handed. The whole “dog ate my homework” excuse just isn’t going to fly, either.
Getting A Massage?
This tabby cat almost appears to be at the spa, getting a much-needed massage. That's pretty much how people look when they’re on those special massage tables that your face looks down through.
It’s much more likely that kitty climbed on top of a table or something and proceeded to pass out in this bizarre position with their arms fully extended out front. That perfect little pink nose and scrunched-shut eyes are too cute!
Boot-iful Dreamer
After one look at this photo, we decided that we need a human-sized boot to sleep in every night. Kind of like a sleeping bag, just that it's a shoe.
This lucky kitty is at just the perfect age and size to fit into just about any boot she comes across. Just check out that blissed-out expression and adorable paw sticking out. Those fleece linings must really feel like heaven – the commercials aren’t lying!
Read Anything Good Lately?
Looks like this little snoozer has found just what they were looking for... the most boring book in the world! They say reading is one of the best ways to relax and get ready for a good nights' sleep, and the brainiac kitty here is proof of that.
It doesn’t matter that the cat isn't exactly doing it right. What counts is that it found a bookshelf and browsed through the titles until it passed out from sheer boredom. Hey, whatever works.

Have you ever experienced motion sickness when you've been a passenger in a car? No? Neither has this zonked-out kitty. She apparently decided to imitate her human’s seat belt and fell asleep that way, just draped across her lap.
That means the woman in the photo is wearing three belts. The seat belt for safety, the regular belt to keep her pants in place, and the cat belt as the ultimate comfort accessory.

Now that the new baby gets all the attention, this enormous orange tabby cat has apparently decided to copy all the baby's moves. Fortunately, it's pretty easy. You basically just lie there flat on your back with your arms and legs stretched out. Extend your fingers and toes for extra points.
There’s one part of it that kitty can’t figure out, though. What do you do with your tail?! The cat won't be able to sleep until its tail is in the right place.

We don’t know how in the world he ended up like this. Was he making a midnight snack and thought he’d put his head down for a second, only to fall asleep and have his roomie find him like this in the morning? That’s our best guess at this point.
A Couch Made For Kitty
In case you haven't noticed, the color gray took over everything a few years ago. It’s the "new neutral" and the hue of choice for everything from walls to floors to furniture.
This cat doesn’t care one bit about all that or the fact that it perfectly matches the color of the sofa it's sound asleep on. All the cat knows is that the little space between the sofa back and the cushions was custom made just to get all cozy in. Belly up, of course.
Stack 'Em Up!
Now this is one adorable way to stay warm, even if it looks terribly awkward. We have not one, not two or three, but four little kitty cats that are all lined up for warmth and cuddles as they catch a random nap outside.
We have no idea if this is something the cats do a lot or if it was a one-time occasion, but we're happy that the whole kitty cuddle train was caught on camera!
When A Cat Loves A Bowl
This precious kitty is named Zappa and she's pretty famous now thanks to this ridic photo of her snoozing in a glass bowl. Her human, Lana, shared the story with ABC and said that Zappa has a thing for that particular bowl.
"One day we were making a salad and took the bowl out of the cabinet. After cutting some veggies we looked up and saw that Zappa was taking a nap in the bowl," Lana said. “Since that day she gets in bowls whenever she can.”
Mirror, Mirror
Science tells us that people tend to mirror each other when they're interacting. It’s supposed to mean that they’re feeling "in sync" and that they like and trust each other.
From the looks of it, mirroring happens between different species too! Just witness this cat and dog pair, just snoozing away on the floor together in the exact same side position and acting like they’re not even supposed to be enemies.
Fresh Air, Don't Care
If it seems like cats sleep an awful lot, you're completely right. Cats spend about 70% of their lives asleep, which works out to about 13-16 hours a day.
With so many sleepy-time hours to fill, cats have to get creative. That’s why you see them in crazy places like this so much. They’re just trying to keep things fresh and interesting for all of us. And we all appreciate it!
The Sunbather
This cat is just casually taking in the sun on a tin roof like that's a normal thing for a cat to do. The feline must have owners that love to sunbathe, because it has the position down.
Stretched out on its back, the cat has its paw behind its head and its legs plopped out to either side. It's cat friend at the bottom of the photo seems to be on high alert, as though it's the lounging cat's head of security.
No One Turn On The Radiator!
This image proves that kittens are always impossibly adorable, even when they are wedged into a radiator. We can not imagine how this position could be comfortable enough to fall asleep in, but perhaps we're just underestimating the power of a fur coat.
This cat owner must have to thoroughly evaluate the radiator before turning it on in the winter, because they never know what crevice the kitten's going to crawl into this time.
The Balancing Act
This cat is somehow maintaining its balance atop a stack of books, a cardboard box, and a glass shelf. We can't imagine it being very comfortable to have your face smooshed up against the edge of a book, but this cat doesn't seem to mind at all.
We thought sleeping on hard surfaces was a pain enough, but this cat takes the cake for having a high tolerance. It gives the term "cat nap" a whole new meaning.
The Cat In The Box
This adorable cat making living out of a box look like a luxurious arrangment. It has its paw draped over the side of the cardboard and its back arched as though it's not concerned with the limited space.
We have to assume that a cat's fur must be pretty snuggly to make a cardboard box comfortable. The cat looks like it was photoshopped out of a plush bed and put into the box as a joke.
The Corpse Cat
This cat is lying on its back so erect that it looks like a stiff corpse. It's white fur only adds to the corpse look and brings to mind the phrase "sleeping like the dead." Though the feline looks oddly tense for being asleep, its facial expression looks quite content.
Judging by the cat's adorable smile, we'd guess it was having a pleasant dream. Perhaps it's envisioning itself flying, which would explain why the cat is holding the Superman position while lying on its back.
The Sleepy Worker
Anyone who has felt exhausted while sitting at a computer desk can relate to this sleep cat. Draped over a computer monitor, this feline looks like it was hard at work when it fell asleep.
In actuality, the precious pet was probably trying to get the attention of their owner while they were working on the computer. We would imagine that the heat from the monitor could have helped to soothe the cat to sleep.
In The Mood For Barbecue
Just imagine opening up a barbecue and discovering a cat snuggled up inside. If this image proves anything, it's that you should check absolutely every concievable spot if your cat goes missing, because you never know where they'll be napping.
The cat has one leg on either side of the top barbecue rack and is leaning into the lid as though it were sprawled out on a bed. When it wakes up we'd expect a streak of ash on its fur.
A Cat And Dog Snuggle Fest
Though cats and dogs don't always get along, sometimes they can become the best of friends. Those who are both cat and dog people will be happy to see this pair curled up together on the couch.
It looks like the dog sprawled out first and the cat lied down on top facing the opposite direction. The feline's face looks peacefully asleep atop the soft fur of its canine sibling. The dog seems to appreciate the extra warmth and comfort.
The Cat Couple
These cats aren't in an awkward position by human standards, but they certainly aren't in a pose you'd expect of felines. The pair look like a married couple snuggling together in bed.

We've heard of sleep walking and even of sleep eating, but we've never heard of sleep standing. This adorable kitten is technically sitting, but it's in such an upright position that it's as though she's standing up while sleeping.
Its adorable, tiny face is clearly in a blissful dreamstate despite its body looking fully awake. This kitten must have been extremely tired to have fallen asleep before it even had time to lie down on the floor!
