These Are Each State’s Most Sought-After Dog Breeds

Karyn Bailey | February 29, 2024 9:16 pm

There are some dog breeds that stand out above the rest in terms of popularity. In the US, the number one most registered dog is Labrador Retrievers, a title they've held for decades, according to the American Kennel Club.

Joybird decided to look not at registered dogs, but rather internet searches to analyze what breeds pique the most interest state-by-state. You may think that Californians are all about Chihuahuas and that Alaskans love their Huskies, but those aren't the states' most sought-after breeds. Read on to see what breeds residents around the country are looking into most.

The success of the Air Bud franchise is a testament to America's lasting love of Golden retrievers. One state that loves them above other breeds is Colorado. The state appreciates Goldens so much that they even had a gathering in Denver to celebrate International Golden Retriever Day.

AKC notes that the dogs are both committed workers and friendly family dogs. The athletic breed weighs an average of 65 pounds and is highly intelligent. Coloradans will be happy to hear that Goldens love the great outdoors and are talented swimmers.

Pomeranians may look small, but they have a massive personality that makes them irresistible to Hawaii dwellers. Though they are the descendants of larger sled dogs, Poms are tiny enough to appreciate warmer climates. Still, their athletic background explains the Pomeranian's funloving energy.

The perky companions will wear themselves out just from indoor activities, making them an ideal city dog. Poms are also highly intelligent and thus very trainable. They'll happily play with their owner or take a snuggle break. Their charm and liveliness explain why Poms are not only a popular toy dog in Hawaii but also across the globe.

One of their biggest perks is that Havanese can live up to 16 years! They're also easily adaptable and trainable and only need a moderate amount of exercise. Havanese do get lonely easily, so they are best suited for those who work from home.

Beverly Hills stereotypes may have left you with the assumption that Californians love their purse Chihuahuas above all else. As it turns out, French bulldogs are actually at the top of the list in this state.

According to The American Kennel Club, these cuties max out at 28 pounds, making them well-suited for the more populous cities in California. French bulldogs are also neighbor-approved as they don't bark much. To top it off, they don't need much exercise, are friendly with other pets, and rarely shed.

AKC calls them "the most agreeable of all small housedogs," noting their strength and affection. The 30-pound dogs are surprisingly agile, making them perfect companions for darting through the scenic trails of Oregon. They also have a waterproof coat that's well-suited for rainy seasons.

Leave it to a Pennsylvanian to set the record straight on Rottweilers. Though they may seem like an intimidating breed, that's only because they are territorial by nature. Behind closed doors, these powerful dogs may as well be a teddy bear.

New Jersey's favored dog could easily be confused with that of New York. That's because Maltese and Havanese are cousins, hence their similar names. The funny thing is we could say the same thing about the two states! Maltese have a regal coat that makes them look incredibly elegant.

Don't let their looks fool you for laziness, though. The Maltese may only be 7 pounds, but it'll be as athletic as it can be and is bursting with energy. Still, a little goes a long way when it comes to activity, so a fenced yard is plenty for these little charmers.

If you're like us, you may have assumed that Alaskans would opt for a sled dog like the Malamute or Siberian Husky. As it turns out, they spend more time looking up bloodhounds than any other breed. After all, who could resist that droopy face?

Bloodhounds are famous search dogs, so be prepared for a stubborn pet when it comes to scent. Otherwise, these canines are easygoing housedogs who will love the whole family. Their powerful build needs to get exercised regularly, so letting these sniffers out into the wider terrain of Alaska would be their paradise.

At the top of Nevada's list of dog breeds is the Shetland sheepdog, called Shelties for short. Though their fluffy coat makes them look like medium-sized dogs, Shelties only weigh 15 to 25 pounds, making them especially agile. Though they aren't as energetic as their Collie cousins, they do need moderate exercise.

Shelties are perfect for owners who want a dog to play with, but not necessarily one to train for a marathon alongside. Their barking and hesitance with strangers make them great watchdogs, but they are also sensitive and loving when it comes to family.

Shih Tzus are all about attention, so they'd be pleased to know that they top Arizona's list of dog breeds. They aren't your average canine in that they don't live to chase things down or dig. Shih Tzus just want to look cute while you stroke their wild fur.

Speaking of their coat, it's untamed by nature so be prepared to groom your Shih Tzu often. At the very least, the fur at their snout needs to be kept short so it doesn't get into their eyes. Otherwise, these affectionate little dogs just require a couple of short walks a day.

Daschunds' stubby legs and long snout make them easy to recognize, while their spunky attitude makes them hard to forget. This breed tops the list in Mississippi, which isn't hard to understand if you're looking for a playful companion.

Part of Daschund's bold personality is their stubbornness, which is thanks to their hunting background. Though Daschunds are fearless, they're limited by their body composition and don't make for running dogs. AKC also suggests not letting them jump on furniture due to the impact, which is something many dog owners are happy to obey.

Siberians are especially happy when they're working alongside their owner. So long as their exercise needs are met, these canines can thrive just about anywhere as they are highly adaptable.
