Netflix Shows: Cancellations And Renewals For 2023
One of the reasons why Netflix is one of the top streaming services across the globe is because they have a vast array of original content.
While many titles have been renewed for this year, there have unfortunately been many cancellations as well. Continue reading to see which Netflix series will stick around and which ones got the boot.
Renewed: The Recruit
The spy-adventure drama, The Recruit, was picked up for a second season in 2023. Noah Centineo plays Owen Hendricks, a CIA lawyer who gets involved with the wrong people after meeting an asset.
Rotten Tomatoes states, "The Recruit may not be the freshest chip off the old block, but it employs Noah Centineo's considerable charms to highly watchable effect."
Canceled: Uncoupled
After one season on the streaming service, Netflix made the decision to cancel Uncoupled. The show starred Neil Patrick Harris as a 40-something man looking for love in New York City.
Fortunately, fans of the series shouldn't fret just yet. It was announced that Showtime picked up the show for season two.
Renewed: Selling Sunset
Fans of the real estate reality show Selling Sunset should rejoice because the series has been picked up for at least two additional seasons in 2023.
However, it looks as though not every member of the Oppenheim group will be returning to the series. Christine Quinn has exited the show ahead of season six.
Canceled: 1899
Netflix revealed that the German mystery and science fiction series, 1899, will not be moving forward after an eight-episode first season.
During its debut week, 1899 ranked as the second-highest series for the streaming platform, with almost 80 million views after the first three days. It also received generally positive reviews from critics.
Renewed: Queer Eye
It's good news for all Queer Eye fans. The hit reality series will be returning for another season on Netflix.
For season seven, the Fab Five will be traveling to New Orleans, Louisiana. They filmed the upcoming season in the summer of 2022, and it will be available to stream at some point in 2023.
Canceled: Inside Job
Inside Job is an animated workplace comedy set in a world that revolves around theories such as flat Earth and the Moon landing.
Initially, Inside Job was picked up for a second season in June 2022. However, Netflix changed its mind and officially canceled the series after one season in 2023.
Renewed: Monster
After millions of viewers tuned in to watch Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Netflix decided to renew the true crime anthology series for at least two additional seasons.
These upcoming seasons will focus on other notorious figures in history. Evan Peters won Best Actor at the 2023 Golden Globes for his performance.
Canceled: Dead End: Paranormal Park
Dead End: Paranormal Park is an animated fantasy comedy series on Netflix based on the graphic novel DeadEndia.
After two seasons on Netflix, the streaming platform has decided to cancel the show. Dead End: Paranormal Park received rave reviews from critics and was even called "groundbreaking." Sadly, it didn't make the renewal cut.
Renewed: Big Mouth
After premiering in 2018, Netflix's Big Mouth will return for its seventh season in 2023. Created by actor and comedian Nick Kroll, the show revolves around middle school-aged kids who are being guided in life by their hormone monsters.
All seasons of the animated series have a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Canceled: The Chair
Sandra Oh plays an English department chair in a dramady called The Chair. However, after one season, it was pulled by Netflix.
One critic wrote, "The Chair is too short to achieve all of its ambitions, but spot-on observations about academia and a sturdy ensemble led by an empathetic - and hilarious - performance by Sandra Oh ensure it's never less than watchable."
Renewed: Bridgerton
Bridgerton has become one of the most talked-about shows on Netflix. This period drama centers on the love lives of the Bridgerton family.
It was announced that the series would return for at least two more seasons for seasons three and four. The third season will focus on the relationship between Penelope and Colin.
Canceled: Juvenile Justice
After one season on Netflix, the South Korean drama Juvenile Justice has been canceled. The team was working on pre-production of season two when they discovered the news.
The show's lead was praised for her acting. Jonathan Wilson of Ready Steady Cut said, "Kim Hye-Soo delivers a tremendous performance here that the writing doesn't always support."
Renewed: Emily In Paris
The hit romantic comedy series, Emily in Paris, will be returning for a fourth season in 2023. The show follows a young woman in the digital marketing industry who moves to Paris.
While some critics loved the character of Emily, others thought she was kind of one-dimensional. Emma Gray from the Huffington Post said Emily was a "bland" character.
Canceled: Hot Skull
While Netflix's Hot Skull did very well in its native market of Turkey, it didn't do so hot in other countries around the world.
This led Netflix to make the decision to cancel the miniseries after an eight-episode season. Hot Skull takes place in a dystopian society where an epidemic spreads through verbal communication.
Renewed: Human Resources
Human Resources is a spin-off of the hit Netflix animated series Big Mouth. The show was picked up for a second season in 2023.
Human Resources follows a group of creatures such as Hormone Monsters, Depression Kitties, and Shame Wizards as they help humans with their everyday problems. The show's voice cast includes Aidy Bryant, Keke Palmer, Maya Rudolph, and more.
Canceled: Mindhunter
While Netflix never officially canceled Mindhunter, executive producer David Fincher confirmed it wouldn't return for a third season.
"I'm very proud of the first two seasons. But it's a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn't attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment [for season three]," said Fincher.
Renewed: Is It Cake?
One of the most original reality baking competition shows on Netflix is Is It Cake?. This light-hearted show has bakers create cakes that replicate common objects.
The series was based on a viral internet trend popularized on YouTube and TikTok. Is It Cake? was renewed for a second season by Netflix in 2023.
Ending: Never Have I Ever
The laugh-out-loud teen comedy series Never Have I Ever will be saying farewell to Netflix after its fourth season in 2023.
Created and loosely based on the life of Mindy Kaling, the show follows a teenage girl and her friends at her Los Angeles high school. Critics and audiences praised the series for taking on sensitive topics with a comedic and relatable spin.
Renewed: Wednesday
One of the biggest breakout shows of the last year is the dark supernatural comedy Wednesday. The series is based on the characters from The Addams Family.
Since the show was a major success for Netflix, it was renewed for a second season. Many critics loved the original performance by Wednesday actress Jenna Ortega.
Ending: Cobra Kai
Cobra Kai is a sequel series that follows The Karate Kid franchise. Fans of the show may be upset that it is set to end after its upcoming sixth season on Netflix.

Renewed: Love Is Blind
Love is Blind is a reality dating show. Single men and women take part in a social experiment where they get engaged before seeing each other in person.
The popular Netflix series has been renewed for both a fourth and fifth season, with the fourth season premiering on March 24, 2023.
Ending: The Crown
Those who can't get enough of the royal family may be sad to hear that Netflix's The Crown will be ending after its sixth season.
This season will pick up in 1997 and follow the Queen's life into the 2000s. The relationship between William and Kate will also be a focus.
Renewed: Black Mirror
The British anthology series Black Mirror will return for a sixth season on Netflix in 2023. Most of the episodes are set in futuristic dystopian worlds with themes of science fiction.
Publications such as The Independent and Entertainment Weekly list Black Mirror as being one of the best shows of the last decade.
Ending: The Umbrella Academy
Fans of The Umbrella Academy may be disappointed that the series is ending in 2023 after its fourth season. There will also only be six episodes instead of the usual 10.

Those who love the teen mystery drama Outer Banks can celebrate because Netflix announced that a fourth season is on the way.
Outer Banks ranked highly on the Nielson ratings with over two billion views in the United States after its first week of streaming on Netflix. The show also won the Most Bingeworthy Show Award at the People's Choice Awards.
Ending: Stranger Things
One of the longest-running shows on Netflix is set to say its final goodbyes after its fifth season. Stranger Things is actually coming to an end.
The creators of the show have planned for it to end after five seasons since the beginning. Fans can expect the episodes to drop in 2024.
Renewed: Ratched
Based on the character Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, the Netflix series Ratched is about the infamous nurse in her early adult years.
Sarah Paulson was applauded for her emotional performance in the series. While there isn't much information, it was announced that the show would return for a second season.
Ending: Firefly Lane
Based on the novel of the same name, Firefly Lane is about the lives of two girls from their teenage years in the 1970s all the way to adulthood in the mid-2000s.
Unfortunately, Firefly Lane will be ending on April 27, 2023, after airing the second part of the second season.
Renewed: That '90s Show
Fans of That '70s Show no longer have to say farewell to the beloved characters. Netflix announced that a second season of the sequel series, That '90s Show, is on the way.
Critics on Rotten Tomatoes said, "A solidly serviceable sequel series, That '90s Show, may take a little time to find its rhythm, but still delivers a respectable number of warmly nostalgic laughs."
Ending: Mo
Loosely based on the life of Mo Amer, Mo is a dramedy about a Palestinian refugee living in Houston, Texas, who is seeking American citizenship.
Netflix announced that Mo would be ending after its second season in 2023. Mo received critical acclaim for being one of the first American TV shows to have a Palestinian refugee as the protagonist.
