Celebrity Couples Who Called It Quits In 2020
If 2020 taught the world anything, it's to expect the unexpected, including some favorite celebrity couples splitting up and making people wonder if love even exists anymore! Alas, for these stars, it doesn't, and couples like Clark Gregg and Jennifer Grey have said goodbye and gone their separate ways.
From Mary-Kate Olsen's emergency request to divorce from Olivier Sarkozy to the clashing personalities and lifestyles of Riverdale stars Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart, several celebrity relationships hit their breaking point. The year 2020 was a whirlwind of heartbreak, lengthy social media posts, and a return to the single life for some high-profile celebrities.
Olivia Wilde & Jason Sudeikis
Booksmart director Olivia Wilde and funnyman Jason Sudeikis began seeing one another in 2011, after meeting at a finale party for Saturday Night Live. They hit it off right away, and a year later, Sudeikis proposed. Seven years later, with no "I do's" said between the two, they called the engagement off.
According to a source, their split happened at the beginning of 2020 and was kept very quiet. During an interview with People, the source said, "The split happened at the beginning of the year. It's been amicable, and they've transitioned into a great co-parenting routine. The children are the priority and the heart of the family’s relationship."
Christina & Ant Anstead
Flip or Flop star Christina Anstead (formally El Moussa) started dating Wheeler Dealers host Ant Anstead in 2017, after a half-hour-long phone conversation, none the less. Either way, they hit it off, and the reality stars were married in a "winter wonderland wedding" a year later. But, as the story goes with a lot of celebrities, their marriage didn't last.
Less than two years later, in November of 2020, the Christina on the Coast star filed for divorce from Anstead. On her Instagram account, Christina wrote, "Ant and I have made the difficult decision to separate."
Mary-Kate Olsen & Olivier Sarkozy
First getting together in 2012, Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy have been pretty good about keeping their relationship out of the public eye. Even after their 2015 wedding, the couple stayed very private. That is until news sparked about an apparent divorce being filed by The Elizabeth & James designer in 2020.
Apparently, Olsen wasn't too happy with her former husband when he invited his ex-wife to stay with them in their Bridgehampton home amid the 2020 lockdown. Honestly, a source says it best, stating during an interview, "Would you want the ex-wife living with you for an unforeseeable amount of time in the middle of a crisis?" Answer: nope.
Aaron Rodgers & Danika Patrick
Meeting at the ESPYs in 2012, it was years before Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and former NASCAR driver Danika Patrick began dating. But, in 2018, Patrick put their dating rumors to rest, announcing that the two were in fact the new power couple on the block. Okay, maybe she didn't say it exactly like that.
Anyway, the two were serious, to the point where Patrick was willing to root for the Packers even though she is a long-time Chicago Bears. Apparently, that wasn't enough for the football player, though, and the two called it quits in 2020.
Kacy Musgraves & Ruston Kelly
Six-time Grammy Award-winning singer Kacy Musgraves didn't have an award-winning year in 2020, filing for divorce with her husband, fellow country singer Ruston Kelly, after two years of marriage. That's right, they said the two "simply didn't work," and made the joint decision to separate.
Sorry, country fans, but their joint Instagram statement speaks wonders. In it, the former couple said, "We've made this painful decision together — a healthy decision that comes after a very long period of trying the best we can. It simply just didn't work. Though we are parting ways in marriage, we will remain true friends for the rest of our lives..."
Johnny Galecki & Alaina Meyer
In 2018, Big Bang Theory alum Johnny Galecki and model Alaina Meyer were spotted on Tahiti Beach in the Bahamas together. And while the two were never engaged, they did welcome a beautiful baby boy into the world. But that wasn't enough to keep the two from splitting.
According to a source, the couple decided to go their separate ways in 2020, deciding it would be better to co-parent than be together after what Meyer's called " the gnarliest year of my life, with the highest highs and the lowest lows."
Zoe Kravitz & Karl Glusman
First spotted holding hands together after a dinner party at The Fat Radish restaurant in 2016, Big Little Lies actress Zoe Kravitz, and Love actor Karl Glusmam had a whirlwind romance for a few years before becoming engaged in 2018. It wasn't long after that they wed at the home of Lenny Kravitz, Zoe's father.
Then, in 2020, after 18 months of marriage, The Batman actress filed for divorce from Glusman. Needless to say, the mutual friend who set the two up is probably feeling a bit like a dog with its tail between its legs right about now.
Tyrese & Samantha Gibson
Tyrese and Samantha Gibson were introduced by mutual friends in 2016. It wasn't long after their initial meeting that the Fast and the Furious star began referring to Samantha as "his future wife." Well, props to a man who knows what he wants because the two were wed in 2017.
Unfortunately, their love didn't last. And, in 2020, the Gibson's announced their plans to file for divorce. In a lengthy Instagram post, they said, "As if 2020 hasn't already been extremely grueling and challenging to us all, we wanted to mutually speak on this now to keep this energy in 2020 and not take this energy into 2021."
Lindsey Vonn & P.K. Subban
Former Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn and NHL defenseman P.K. Subban met at a Nickelodeon sports show in 2017 but didn't begin dating until a year later. As Vonn puts it, though, the professional hockey player kind of won her over. Then, just a year later, the two athletes announced their engagement.
But, they didn't make it to the "I do's," breaking off their engagement in 2020. On Instagram, Vonn wrote a message to the public, saying, "after much consideration, we have decided to move forward separately. We will always remain friends and love each other immensely."
Bill Hader & Rachel Bilson
Actors Bill Hader and Rachel Bilson were unavailable to one another when they co-starred in the 2013 rom-com The To Do List. It wasn't until years later, in 2019, that the rumor mill began to turn when the two were spotted getting a cup of coffee together.
In 2020, the Barry star and Heart of Dixie actress attended the Golden Globes together, announcing their relationship to the public. They might have jumped into the public eye a bit too soon since the couple split up later that same year.
Cole Sprouse & Lili Reinhart
Actors Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart were destined to have some whirlwind romance. Seriously, they play each other's love interest in a CW teen soap opera; it was bound to happen! And it did, for a few years. It wasn't until 2020 that the two went their separate ways.
The thing is, this 2020 spit wasn't their first rodeo, having broken things off with one another the previous summer, too. A source went to People with some inside information on their split, saying, "their personalities are very different, and their lifestyles often clashed...[they're] trying to be as amicable and friendly as possible."
Clark Gregg & Jennifer Grey
In 2001, Clark Gregg and Jennifer Grey co-starred in the Lifetime movie Road to Christmas. That same year, they wed on Martha's Vineyard and welcomed a beautiful baby girl into their lives. But it wasn't meant to last, and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D star and Dirty Dancing alum announced their split on July 3, 2020, after 19 years of marriage.
In an emotional Instagram post, Gregg and Grey released a joint statement, saying, "We separated in January, knowing we'd always be a family who loves, values and cares for each other. We recently made the difficult decision to divorce..."
Jonah Hill & Gianna Santos
Academy Award-nominated actor Jonah Hill is notoriously private when it comes to his private life. But it wasn't enough to keep eagle-eyed paparazzo from snapping a picture of him with then-girlfriend Gianna Santos in 2018. A year later, Hill confirmed that he and the Violet Gray content manager were engaged.
Alas, love didn't last for the Wolf of Wall Street actor, and the two went their separate ways in 2020. According to one source, the split between the actor and fashionista was completely amicable.
MC Lyte & John Wyche
After meeting on Match.com in 2016, rapper MC Lyte and Marine Corp veteran and entrepreneur John Wyche were quickly engaged. A few months later, they said their "I do's" at a beach wedding in Montego Bay, Jamacia, starting their life as a happily married couple. Well, that happiness didn't last, and the Grammy-nominated rapper filed for divorce in August of 2020.
After three solid years of marriage, Lyte cites the reason for the split as "irreconcilable differences. Three years of being husband and wife, and the two couldn't figure out a few arguments? Does love even exist anymore?
Adrianne Palicki & Scott Grimes
Apparently, for The Orville stars Adrianne Palicki and Scott Grimes, one almost-divorce wasn't enough; they had to go and be all dramatic and do it twice. First announcing their coupling during Comic-con in 2018, the actors married a year later.
But, it didn't take long until Palicki filed for divorce. A solid two months, to be exact. Apparently, they worked something out because a few months later, she dismissed the filing. Well, maybe she should have gone with her gut because the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D star filed for a second time in July of 2020.
Joey Lawrence & Chandie Yawn-Nelson
Melissa & Joey actor Joey Lawrence and Chandie Yawn-Nelson didn't meet in recent years. In fact, the two met back in 1993 when they were both on a trip to Disney World with their families. Years later, the two reconciled, wound up dating, got engaged, and, in 2005, had a fairytale wedding where it all began -- at the Happiest Place on Earth.
Of course, this time, they were in a Disney wedding chapel and not meeting at the Dumbo ride. Alas, after 15 years of marriage, a little bout of bankruptcy, and two kids, Lawrence filed for divorce in July of 2020.
Luke Evans & Rafa Olarra
It's unclear how the Hobbit actor Luke Evans and professional soccer player Rafa Olarra originally met, but one thing's for sure, they went Instagram official in February of 2020. And when they went official, this celebrity couple made people a little more than jealous, showing off their luxurious vacations together!
But it looks like stars can be petty during break-ups, too. After Evans scrubbed all traces of Olarra from his Instagram page in October of 2020, even going as far as unfollowing the athlete, people are more than willing to assume the two have called it quits.
Ashley Benson & Cara Delevingne
Pretty Little Liars star Ashley Benson and model Cara Delevingne sparked romance rumors in 2018 after Benson posted a selfie of the two looking cozy together in a cab. Of course, being the stars they are, the two didn't confirm their relationship until 2019. Which, apparently, turned out to be a good idea since they split a year later, in 2020.
According to a source, the two stars went their separate ways in early April of 2020. In a statement released to People, the source said, "Cara and Ashley always had their ups and downs before, but it's over now. Their relationship just ran its course."
Armie Hammer & Elizabeth Chambers
After Thirteen years as a couple, ten years of marriage, two kids, and a whole lot of memories, in 2020, Armie Hammer and Elizabeth Chambers decided to end their status as husband and wife. Years before saying "I do," Hammer was introduced to Chambers by his artist friend, Tyler Ramsey.
The two kicked it off and were married in May of 2010. Ten years later, Chambers posts on Instagram, "Thirteen years as best friends, soulmates, partners, and then parents. It has been an incredible journey, but together, we've decided to turn the page and move on from our marriage."
Simone Biles & Stacey Ervin Jr.
Four-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles began dating Stacey Ervin Jr. in the summer of 2017 after he was hired as a coach at the gym where she trained. From there, it was a love story made in gymnastics heaven. But it didn't last.
After three years together, in early March of 2020, Biles and Ervin Jr. called in quits. During an interview with Vogue, Biles discussed the break-up, saying, "It's hard being young and having that long of a relationship and then ending it. But it was for the best."
