There’s Some Great New Content Coming To Netflix In October
Another month is on the way, which means Netflix is bringing in some new content for subscribers to enjoy. Original movies, new seasons of fan favorites, and some interesting documentaries are on the docket for October, with a bit of Halloween spookiness thrown into the mix.
From the sixth season of the Emmy Award-winning series Schitt's Creek to the 2016 animated film Batman: The Killing Joke, Netflix subscribers have a lot to look forward to this upcoming month. So, without further ado, here is some of the new content being added to the Netflix catalog for October of 2020.
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
In October, legendary pet detective Ace Ventura is coming to Netflix. Well, at least in the second movie. Ace is called out of retirement and sent to Africa to find an endangered white bat in Ace Ventura: When Natural Calls. Honestly, it might be the second film, but you don't have to see the first to appreciate the hilarity that is the one and only Jim Carrey.
We mean, where else can you watch the comedian try to rescue a bat that can ultimately be responsible for civil war between two rival tribes? Answer: nowhere but on Netflix in October.
Troy
Get ready, because the tale of Troy, based on Homer's Iliad, is coming to Netflix in October! It's time to watch the epic battle between Troy and Sparta, but mostly it's time to drool over a young Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom, and Eric Bana as they wear "traditional garb" and fight each other for the freedom of Troy.
Of course, there's a love story thrown in there which actually starts the entire war (thank you, Helen). If you've never seen this film before, we recommend waiting until you have a lot of time on your hands, as it is over three hours long.
Ghost Rider
Is it even Netflix if they don't add a Nic Cage movie to their catalog? For October, the movie comes in the form of the 2007 film Ghost Rider. You know, the flick where Cage's character Johnny Blaze makes a deal with the devil to save a loved one, selling his soul and turning into an avenging skeleton of justice that lights on fire and drives a cool motorcycle.
Are you interested yet? Well, you should be! This is a great film to add to your list of Halloween movies, so get ready and stock up on your popcorn.
Cape Fear
The 1991 remake of the classic 1962 black and white thriller Cape Fear is coming to Netflix in October. While the original is definitely something everyone should see at least once, the remake is also very well done. Starring Robert De Niro as the predator Max Cady, the film follows him as he tries his hardest to ruin the lives of the Bowden family.
See, Mr. Bowden is an attorney who withheld evidence in court that would have acquitted Cady of his charges. Well, he winds up spending 14 years in prison. Now, he's out, and he's looking for revenge.
Schitt's Creek - Season 6
Good news to all you fans out there, the Emmy Award-winning television series Schitt's Creek is coming to Netflix with its sixth season. It's time to hop back to the town of Schitt's Creek with the Rose family, seeing what type of trouble and nonsense they can stir up in yet another season of hilarity.
As many critics and fans have stated, there is no better show on television right now. So, if you're behind the times and haven't started watching the comedy series, you're in for a binge-watching treat. Get a move on before the sixth season drops on Netflix in October!
Poseidon
If you've never seen the 2006 movie Poseidon, let us tell you right now that the film is a bucket of anxiety. Set on New Year's Eve, the movie follows a group of strangers as their world is literally turned upside down when a gigantic tidal wave crashes into the side of Posiden, the cruise ship they're all celebrating on.
Now, it's up to Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossum, Jacinda Barrett, and others to work together to find a way out of the upside-down maze. Oh, and they have to do it fast because the ship is quickly filling with water.
Stranger Than Fiction
Bear with us, because Stranger than Fiction is a weird sort of mind game. Starring Will Ferrell, the film follows the story of IRS auditor Harold Crick as he starts hearing a voice in his head. As it turns out, the voice is actually author Karen Effiel, and Crick is the new protagonist in her story.
Of course, he's not overly thrilled with the way his/her story is going, so Crick and professor Jules Hilbert, who happens to be played by Dustin Hoffman, set out to find the author to beg her to change the ending of the story.
Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past
It might be a bit early for Christmas-themed movies, but it has ghosts, so we're going to call Ghosts of Girlfriends Past a Halloween movie. Starring Matthew McConaughey because it's a rom-com, the film follows his character, bachelor Connor Mead, as he is visited by the ghosts of his past girlfriends.
And, in a very Christmas Story fashion, they each bring him on a journey to show what it's like to date him and why each of his relationships is an ultimate failure. The goal: to see if Connor is ever going to change and find true love.
Superman Returns
In October, Netflix is adding the final film of the original Superman series, Superman Returns. After being gone from Earth for a solid five years, Clark Kent returns to find things are not entirely the same as when he left. His love interest Lois Lane moved on with her life and his arch-nemesis Lex Luther has a new plot to change North America.
This plan includes killing Superman, obviously. Now, the only thing left for the man of steel to do is try to reconnect with Lois while trying to find his new place in the changed world.
Batman: The Killing Joke
If you're up-to-date with your Batman lore, then you know that the 2016 animated film Batman: The Killing Joke is no, well, joke. For an animated movie, it is actually pretty twisted, violent, and disturbing (forewarning!). But, if you think you're up to the task, we recommend watching the masked vigilante take on the Joker when the flick drops to Netflix in October.
This particular film is based on the comic of the same name, following the story of Batman as he tries his hardest to save police commissioner James Gordon as the Joker tries to drive him insane.
The Longest Yard
We're not talking about the Adam Sandler Longest Yard. We're talking about the original Burt Reynolds when he didn't think he was a good actor Longest Yard, released back in 1974. If you haven't seen the OG version, though, the premise is pretty much the same, give or take a few of the quips Sandler makes in the 2005 version.
The movie follows the story of Paul Crewe, a former professional football player serving time in prison. Of course, the warden forces Crewe to round up a group of inmates to play a game against the guards. There's some blackmail involved, but we're not going to give too much away.
Hubie Halloween
It's October, and that means Netflix has to put out some solid Halloween content for subscribers to binge on. This year, they decided to do that in the form of an original movie called Hubie Halloween, starring Adam Sandler and Noah Schnapp.
The movie follows the story of Hubie, a guy who spends each Halloween in his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts, making sure the residents are spending the holiday safely. But this year, everything changes when a criminal escapes prison and people in town start disappearing. This is one Halloween comedy fright-fest you're not going to want to miss.
Deaf U
An interesting documentary coming to Netflix in October is Deaf U. The docu-series explores the deaf community in college, going into the social lives, personal trauma, and causal hookups of seven students. While the series is bound to be entertaining, the creator of the show, Nyle DiMarco, had another goal in mind.
DiMarco's main objective was to make def education readily available to the public. And what better way to do that then a Netflix docu-series? Alexa Paulay-Simmons, one of the students in the show, says, "I hope that people see that in the deaf community, deafness is not really a disability. It's more of an identity."
The Hummingbird Project
In October, get ready to tune in to the world of high-frequency trading with The Hummingbird Project. For cousins Vincent and Anton, building a straight fiber-optic cable line between New Jersey and Kansas is the dream. But what's the cost?
In a world where everything is high-stakes, and the difference between success and failure is determined in milliseconds, the two cousins push each other and everyone around them close to a breaking point to see their dream become a reality.
An Ordinary Man
Ben Kingsley stars in the 2017 film An Ordinary Man, coming to Netflix in October. The war drama follows the story of Kingsley's character "The General," a war criminal who is in hiding and forms an unlikely friendship with the only person he's in contact with, his maid.
Of course, not everything is as it seems, including the maid! The film is based on the true story of Ratko Mladić, a former military general who was sentenced to life in prison for war crimes he committed during the Bosnian War.
Fargo
The 1996 mystery thrill Fargo needs to be added to your must-see list because it's coming to Netflix in October. Set in 1987 in Minnesota, the film follows the story of Jerry Lundegaard, a car salesman who finds himself in a boatload of debt. So, obviously, this reasonable go-to solution is to hire two thugs to kidnap his wife for ransom so he can collect the payout from her wealthy father.
The only issue is that the plan goes up in flames when one of the thugs goes off-script, killing a state trooper. Trust us; this is one film you're not going to want to miss out on watching.
Evil
Since Halloween is right around the corner, what better way to spook yourself than watching the first season of the supernatural thriller series Evil? Kristen Bouchard is a forensic psychologist hired to work alongside a Catholic priest and a contractor to determine if various instances are actual demonic possession or insanity.
The issue is, she's not religious and more than a little skeptical about the assignment. But everything changes for her during the course of the first season. Smartly written and just the right amount of unsettling, Evil is the next binge-worthy show coming to Netflix.
Gran Torino
If you're a Clint Eastwood fan, you're going to be happy to learn the drama Gran Torino is joining Netflix's catalog in October. Recent widow and Korean War Veteran Walt Kowalski is angry at the world, alienated from his family, and wanting nothing to do with his neighbors.
All the old man wants to do is drink and fix up his prized 1972 Ford Gran Torino. But his life is altered when one o his teenage neighbors, Thao Vang Lor, is pressured to steal the car as part of his gang initiation. It doesn't go as planned. But you're going to have to watch the film to see what happens.
Her
Fair warning, if you're one of those people who don't trust A.I., we don't recommend watching this film. On the other hand, it's critically acclaimed and has a 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, so we think you should give it a shot. Not to mention it has the all-star cast of Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson, Rooney Mara, Amy Adams, Chris Pratt, and Olivia Wilde.
Anywho, in Spike Jonze's directorial debut, Her follows the story of Theodore, an emotional mad who doesn't know what to do after his marriage ends. That is until he starts an unorthodox relationship with Samantha, an artificially intelligent virtual assistant.
Hunt For The Wilderpeople
Directed by Taika Waititi, Hunt for the Wilderpeople is one comedy adventure flick you're not going to want to miss when it joins Netflix in October. The film follows the duo of "Uncle" Hector and Ricky Baker, a father figure and foster son who just so happen to be the targets of a manhunt in the New Zealand bush.
As silly as it sounds, the film garnered positive reviews and has a 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. On top of all that, it is the highest-grossing film in New Zealand history. So, that obviously means you should watch it!
